Dear Reader, Every year-end I face the same problem: I need to figure out what to strive for in the new year, personally and professionally. It would be easy to sit back and wait to see what comes my way. But I’m a firm believer in being intentional and challenging myself. Some of my most memorable experiences in life and career have come about by having goals that are aligned with who I am and what I want. So I thought this year I’d pull back the curtain and show you exactly how I go about this. It’s a 12-step process of goal setting. I do it for myself and take all my coaching clients through the same process. You can do it for yourself or, if you want, we can go through the process together. More on that later. You want to identify SMART goals, so objectives that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. This might be old hat for you, but sometimes we need to go back to basics. So, let’s get to it. Goal SettingI use a couple of worksheets that help guide me through the process. You can download them below. Here is what steps are covered: Step 1 - Locate Report Card and Planning Worksheet (past and present) That’s right, I reflect and rate my own performance. I measure it against the goals I had set out the previous year. I’ve been doing this for close to 25 years and it works! It’s how I started and grew my business, how I accomplished almost a dozen remodels and new home builds on two continents, grew and learned how to manage my finances so I am now investing in paper assets, real estate and my business. It helped me focus on health and family while also making a good living and, more importantly, a good life! So, next … Step 2 - Carve Out Some Uninterrupted Time Step 3 - Fill Out Your Report Card Doesn’t it feel good to know what you have accomplished? Step 4 - Identify Your Highlights Step 5 - Rate Yourself This is an important step. We are very good at rationalizing what we did or didn’t do, and this process keeps you from deceiving yourself.
Well done. This is what it takes to reflect on and learn about yourself. You know where you are presently. Now, let’s figure out where you want to go. Step 6 - Brainstorm Specific and Measurable Goals Step 7 - Identify Timeline Step 8 - Identify Revenue Step 9 - Identify Your Annual Theme Step 10 - Fundamental Change to Make This is the part where you might be the most resistant. We all want change, but rarely do we want to look in the mirror and change ourselves! Step 11 - Ultimate Reward Step 12 - Make it Visible

Dear Reader, Another year has passed and it is important for every leader to pause and reflect. And this time I took a bit of a bigger view. After living in a remote part of the Sierra Nevada for four years, I purchased a fixer upper in Monterey, California, six years ago. Everyone I showed the house to thought I had gone nuts. It was built in the 1950s, had never been renovated, had a leaky roof, and was located on a steep hill with a failing foundation (in earthquake country it is not good...
Dear Reader, When things are a little slower in the summer, I tend to reflect and recalibrate. This includes a mindful exploration of where I have come from and where I am trying to go on an individual and a collective level. The Moon | Daniela Bryan In one of these reflections, I thought about the relationship between my father, who was a CEO, and myself. If you are an executive and happen to have a daughter, you might want to read a recent article I wrote. Here’s a glimpse: "Your daughter...
